SkamploggScold's bridle
Scold's bridle, även kallad skamgrimma. Två versioner, 2023 och 2026.Scold's bridle, also called skamgrimma. Two versions, 2023 and 2026.
A scold's bridle is three iron bands around the head and a mouth-iron that goes into the mouth and presses the tongue down. At the back sits a lock for a padlock shackle. It was put on women judged to talk too much. You could not eat in it, not speak, barely swallow.
Jag har gjort den två gånger.I have made it twice.
In 2023 I built it as a head in black ceramic and wire, with golden blown glass that swells inside the cage and pushes out through the gaps. The mask holds, the glass does not give up. It is one of three heads in Kvinnans Form, beside the corset and the crown.
Masken andas. In 2026 I am working with it further in 3D. This version is of the pig-snout type, an iron cage shaped like an animal head with a snout and ears. It will stand on a pedestal hiding a pump, a valve and a pressure sensor, with a tube up into the mask. The mask breathes.
The instrument was built to shut off a breath. Now a machine pumps one in. The mouth-iron meant to hold the tongue still is still there, but the mask draws air, holds it, lets it go. What was meant to be silenced is the only thing that moves.

Kvinnans Form, 2023. Svart keramik, metalltråd, gyllene munblåst glas. Visad på Scout Art 2025.Kvinnans Form, 2023. Black ceramic, wire, golden blown glass. Shown at Scout Art 2025.
The head is black ceramic and wire. Inside sits golden blown glass that swells against the cage and pushes out through the mesh. Mask and glass resist each other. The scold's bridle is one of three heads in Kvinnans Form, beside the corset and the crown.
Masken som andas, 2026The mask that breathes, 2026
Scold's bridle, ongoing. Pig-snout 3D model, breathing pedestal with pump and electronics.
This version is a pig-snout scold's bridle, an iron cage shaped like an animal head with a snout, ears and a grille over the mouth. Drag the model below to turn it around.
Under the mask stands a 165 millimetre pedestal hiding a pump, a valve, a pressure sensor and a driver board. A tube runs up into the mask. The pump draws air through a grid of holes in the floor and pushes it up, so the mask breathes in and out. The silent mask does the one thing it was built to prevent.
